Artwork Information

Contenda is an experimental contest based on "quiz bowl" events at schools and universities. Contestants are provided with a "buzzer" to respond to the host's questions about artists, artworks, and artistic movements. Screen-based visual clues accompany each question. The public is invited to help the artist create questions about artworks in the collection of the de Young, while also engaging in fun and challenging pop quizzes developed by the artist.

To celebrate "Modernism from the National Gallery of Art: The Robert & Jane Meyerhoff Collection," recent de Young Artist-In-Residence, Tim Roseborough, will present Contenda: A Visual Quiz Event, on August 22nd, 2014. This interactive, multi-media event draws from the format of school quiz bowl contests with questions about artistic movements and topics. The August 22 edition of Contenda will focus on artists, artworks and cultural subjects connected to the works on display in the "Modernism" exhibition, which will brings paintings by the great masters of the post-war world to San Francisco.
